In Function

  • While the arteries channel oxygenated blood away from the heart as it pumps, the veins carry blood back to the heart after helping the body’s organs and muscles function.

In Color

  • The arteries are red in color, veins are blue

In Location

  • Arteries are typically found deep in the body, while veins are found close to the surface of the skin.

In Structure

  • Arteries are composed of thick elastic muscle because they are designed to stand up against the pressure of blood that has been pumped by the heart. They do not have valves (except for the semi-lunar valves of the pulmonary artery and the aorta)

  • Veins are composed of a thinner muscle layer, and they have semilunar valves that keep the blood from flowing in the wrong direction (since it could, in theory, return waste materials to the tissues)
